Environmental Education

In 2004, the Armenia Tree Project (ATP) launched its Environmental Education (EE) program. Since its inception, the initiative has partnered with more than 750 educational institutions across Armenia. Over 110,000 students and adults have participated in our educational courses, and approximately 1,850 teachers have been trained using specialized manuals developed by ATP educators.

Our Core Mission

The primary goal of the Environmental Education program is to cultivate a new generation of environmental stewards in Armenia. We empower youth to protect the environment—including caring for ATP-planted trees—and raise critical awareness around global and local challenges, such as:

  • Climate change and the global environmental crisis
  • Deforestation and desertification
  • Inefficient water resource management
  • Biodiversity loss
  • Waste management and recycling

Each year, the program expands its reach, sharing its expertise and raising environmental consciousness among students and young people across all provinces of Armenia.

Key Pillars of the Program

  1. Eco-Education Centers

ATP operates two state-of-the-art education centers: one in the Karin community (Aragatsotn province) and another in the Margahovit community (Lori province). Together, these centers host up to 6,000 students, teachers, and visitors annually.

Visitors engage in both theoretical and practical environmental lessons, alongside guided tours of the centers and their adjacent tree nurseries. Through interactive formats and innovative methodologies, these courses provide school children with an exciting, memorable experience that sparks a lifelong interest in ecology.

  1. The Eco-Club Initiative

ATP establishes school Eco-Clubs throughout Armenia on a competitive basis. Each Eco-Club spans a full academic year and follows a structured, impactful journey:

  • Teacher Training: The program kicks off by training coordinating teachers, equipping them with environmental knowledge and mentorship skills to guide their students.
  • Student Engagement: A dedicated team of 25–30 motivated students is formed at each participating school.
  • School Visits & Leadership Development: ATP educators visit the schools to teach core environmental topics while building essential skills in leadership, teamwork, and project proposal writing. This empowers students to step up as local leaders.
  • Community Problem Solving: Throughout the phase, the Eco-Club identifies pressing environmental issues within their school or community, designing a targeted project to address them.
  • Practical Training & Assignments: After completing theoretical classroom work, Eco-Club students visit our education centers for hands-on, practical learning. Students receive assignments and evaluations throughout the process.
  • Eco-Camp & Project Refinement: The most active and innovative students are selected to attend the Eco-Camp in Margahovit. Here, they work closely with mentors to finalize, package, and polish their community project proposals.
  • Implementation: Backed by ATP’s support, Eco-Club members return home to bring their designed projects to life.
  • The Youth Summit: The annual cycle concludes every December with a flagship Youth Summit. Eco-Clubs present their completed initiatives to a jury of local and international organization representatives. Projects are evaluated, awards are presented across various categories, and the summit provides a unique networking platform where students frequently secure future funding and support from external partners.

To date, ATP has successfully founded 44 Eco-Clubs across the country.

  1. Nationwide Teacher Training

ATP organizes and conducts environmental education training workshops for school teachers across all 11 provinces of Armenia, ensuring eco-literacy integrates into standard curricula.

  1. Curriculum & Material Development

Our expert educators continuously design, publish, and distribute original, high-quality educational materials and manuals tailored for Armenian schools.

  1. Eco-Camps

Hosted at the Margahovit Learning Center, these immersive camps dedicate every single day to exploring environmental issues. The curriculum is packed with practical fieldwork, interactive eco-games, and team challenges.

  1. The Mobile Laboratory

To ensure no community is left behind, ATP’s Mobile Laboratory travels to remote and border regions. Using a specially equipped vehicle, our educators bring the classroom to the field, conducting interactive, hands-on science and environmental lessons right in the schoolyards of distant villages.
